Are You Ready To Write Your Children's Book?
It's time to tell your story
For a lot of people, the idea of writing a children’s book is a fantasy. The hopes, goals, and dreams they have to become a writer become distant memories. Several years ago I realized I was one of these people.
That changed the day I was shopping for some muliticultural children’s books for my niece’s 5th birthday. I went to 4 downtown bookstores and not one of them had a book with a child of color. I was really shocked by this. I decided standing in the children’s section at Barnes & Noble that I had to be part of the solution. Through a process of training, classes, trial and error, and incredible coaching, I unlocked the inner writer that I knew was inside, but never knew how to access.
Do you want to write a children’s book about your family, community or culture? Yes, you do. You have a children’s story to tell, life lessons to teach and a funny story from your childhood to share. The only thing standing in your way is a system and the confidence to write that first picture book.
Or maybe you’ve written a story but that manuscript is stuck in a drawer or languishing in a folder on your computer because you don’t know how to self-publish it.
Even if you’re brand new and haven’t gotten ONE word written for that story idea you’ve dreamed about, don’t worry! The best way to start is by getting some coaching.
• Have you ever struggled trying to choose the best story idea?
• Or don’t have a clue how to begin to write a story?
• And the most common one I often hear is, "I always wanted to write a children’s book?"
Doesn’t it suck to be afraid to go for your dream?
Or Even worse, to lack the confidence to let your creativity flow.
And doesn’t it feel just downright awful to think, who would buy a book I wrote?
Trust me, I have been there. Struggling to get words on the page and trying to find the real focus of my story. So I started investing in myself and my books. I studied the craft of writing and took classes with a writing coach.

Our Children Need You
Did you know that only 6% of children’s books feature a child of color? Yet almost 50% of children ages 5 to 9 in the United States are multicultural. The need for writers of diverse books is tremendous. In fact, the hashtag #weneeddiversebooks has been around for several years, but almost nothing has changed.
Well, guess what? Let’s start a new movement: We Write Diverse Books! It’s a movement to write and publish stories that inspire a love of reading in our children. We can do something about this. We can create greater diversity in children’s books. You can make a difference.
And if large publishing houses are not interested in publishing our stories, then we as a community, should band together and create the change we want to see. We, the community, must write and publish these books. We must tell our stories and share our culture.
